Ten years ago, I created a photo series titled "Soy Puerto Morelos" to capture the essence of this incredible town - its people. A lot has changed over the past decade. We've seen some landmarks disappear and sadly, we've lost some cherished members of our community. This video marks the ten-year anniversary of the series and serves as a tribute to them. - May their memory always be a blessing.
Ten years ago, I embarked on a creative journey that would profoundly impact my life and, I hope, the lives of many others. The photo series "Soy Puerto Morelos" was born out of a deep desire to capture and celebrate the essence of this unique town - its people. As we mark the ten-year anniversary of this project, I want to share the story behind its conception and production, as well as pay tribute to the landmarks and individuals that have shaped Puerto Morelos.
The idea for "Soy Puerto Morelos" came to me during a quiet morning stroll along the beach. The sun was rising, casting a golden hue over the town, and I was struck by the beauty of the everyday moments unfolding around me. Fishermen were ready to go out to sea, children were playing, and families were gathering for breakfast. I realized then that the true spirit of Puerto Morelos lay not just in its stunning landscapes but in the vibrant, diverse community that called it home.
I wanted to create something that would celebrate this spirit and tell the stories of the people who make Puerto Morelos special. Thus, "Soy Puerto Morelos" was conceived as a photo series that would document the lives, traditions, and dreams of the town's residents.
Creating "Soy Puerto Morelos" was a labor of love. I spent months walking the streets, visiting homes, and attending local events, always with my camera in hand. I sought to capture candid moments and genuine expressions, aiming to present an authentic portrayal of life in Puerto Morelos.
I also spent countless hours in conversation with the town's residents. I wanted to understand their stories, their struggles, and their joys.
The journey was not without its challenges. Gaining the trust of people and making them comfortable in front of the camera holding up the sign required patience and empathy. There were moments of frustration when the perfect shot seemed elusive, and days when progress felt slow. However, the support and enthusiasm of the community kept me going.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was seeing the pride and joy in the eyes of those who participated. They were excited to share their stories and be a part of something that celebrated their identity and heritage.
A lot has changed in Puerto Morelos over the past ten years. Some of the landmarks that were featured in the series have disappeared, victims of time and development. More poignantly, we have lost some cherished members of our community. These losses have been deeply felt, and their absence is a reminder of the passage of time and the inevitability of change.
As we mark the ten-year anniversary of "Soy Puerto Morelos," I have created a special video to honor those we have lost and to celebrate the enduring spirit of our town. This video is a tribute to the resilience, warmth, and beauty of Puerto Morelos and its people. May the memories of those who have passed always be a blessing.
"Soy Puerto Morelos" has been an incredible journey, and I am grateful for the experiences and connections it has brought into my life. As I look to the future, I am excited to continue documenting the evolving story of our town. There are new faces, new stories, and new moments to capture, and I am committed to ensuring that the spirit of Puerto Morelos continues to be celebrated and preserved.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey. Your stories, your support, and your love for Puerto Morelos are what make this town truly special. Here’s to the next ten years of "Soy Puerto Morelos."
