"In my work with the indigenous Maya community, I founded the Maya Hinterland Project, a grassroots initiative aimed at raising awareness for the need to support the local community and preserve their culture".

The Maya Hinterland Project: A Grassroots Initiative

Mission Statement

Cultural Preservation

The Maya Hinterland Project is a collaborative grassroots initiative dedicated to preserving and celebrating Maya culture while promoting sustainable community development. Our mission is to empower the indigenous Maya community through education, cultural preservation, and economic support, fostering a brighter future for current and future generations.

The Maya Hinterland Project is committed to preserving the rich heritage of the Maya people. We established a small library at the local Maya museum, providing resources for learning and research. Our Maya theater, where we screen films in the Maya language for children, serves as a vibrant cultural hub. We've also sponsored the production of a coloring book depicting traditional Maya life, jungle plants, and animals, aimed at engaging young minds in their heritage.

Economic Empowerment

Economic Empowerment

Our project supports local Maya beekeepers, enabling them to expand their operations and bring their honey to wider markets. By providing the necessary tools and resources, we have helped triple the number of bees they keep, promoting economic self-sufficiency while preserving a crucial tradition. Through this initiative, we aim to create sustainable income streams for the community, helping them thrive in the modern economy.

Community Support

Education and Awareness

Economic Empowerment

The Maya Hinterland Project plays an active role in supporting the local community through various outreach programs. We collect food, toys, and clothes from donors and distribute them to families in need across the Maya Hinterland. These efforts ensure that basic needs are met, fostering a stronger and more resilient community.

Education and Awareness

Education is a cornerstone of the Maya Hinterland Project. We organize educational trips for Maya children to significant Maya sites like Chichen Itza, providing them with an opportunity to connect with their heritage and learn about their history in a meaningful way. By fostering a sense of pride and awareness among the younger generation, we hope to inspire them to carry forward their culture and traditions.

Vision for the Future

Our vision is to create a sustainable framework where the indigenous Maya community can prosper while preserving their unique heritage. Through our efforts, we seek to build a bridge between tradition and modernity, ensuring that the wisdom and culture of the Maya people continue to flourish for generations to come.

Getting the word out

Speaking three languages helps

Being fluent in three languages—German, Spanish, and English—has been a key asset in promoting the Maya Hinterland Project. This multilingual ability allows me to connect with various audiences across different cultures. I've had the opportunity to discuss the project's goals and achievements in interviews with TV stations, newspapers, and magazines. Additionally, my fluency in these languages enables me to deliver engaging talks and organize photo exhibitions to raise awareness about our work in the Maya Hinterland. By effectively communicating in these languages, I can reach a broader spectrum of supporters, attracting both local and international interest in the project's mission.
